As a fan of the Richard Stark PARKER novels, I was looking forward to reading Darwyn Cooke’s take on the material. This book does not disappoint. Donald Westlake writing as Stark created one of the modern archetypes in Parker. He is the wronged man who is out to make his own justice in a world where the good guys are absent. Much of the Parker material is of the caper variety, but this one is all about Parker’s revenge on the people who tried to kill him and the organization that benefited from that betrayal.
The Hunter is one of the books that shows the possibilities of the comics medium.
Normally, I’m not a big fan of lines, but in this case I made the effort. I picked up a copy of the book at the San Diego Comic Con and got Darwyn Cooke to sign it for me. He is charming and self-effacing. When I told him that I was excited when I saw the announcement that he would be creating a set of the Parker graphic novels, he said, “Me too.”
I could go on, but I will leave that to people making up their ‘Best of 2009.’ lists.
