All of the things that made the Villains United mini-series interesting are missing from this special and that makes this a bad five buck comic book. In the mini-series, the renegade group of villains wants to remain independent and they in turn come into conflict with the organization that wants to press them into service. Here, one of the Luthors engineers a series of jail breaks and the heroes try to stop the villains from escaping. The splinter villain group, the Secret Six, helps a villain escape and avoid the larger conflict. Ta- da, saved you five bucks. If you want to have a world full of villains after the One Year Later break, you could state that in a sentence, but it’s hard to charge five bucks for that sentence.
Artwise, this comic book looks like every comic book penciled by Dale Eaglesham. The art is very busy and line intensive in the beginning and the detail fades as the pages pass as the deadline gets closer. Aesthetically, I like the later cleaner pages, but some artists follow impulses even if they lead to dead ends.
